Sailing
 

The Newport Sea Base provides beginning to advanced sailing classes to youth, ages 7 to 18.  With thirty-five sailboats, ranging from 9' to 38', students learn in age
appropriate, as well as skill-appropriate, boats.  Each set of boats also have two sizes of sails in order to sail in a wide range of conditions, enabling your child to experience as much time on the water as possible.

Sailing 1  (Three consecutive SUNDAYS)

 

From the first day in this BEGINNING  sailing class, students will be on the water, learning to rig the boat, steer, tack, and jibe. Entering the awesome world of sailing, they will improve their self-confidence, teamwork, judgment, and responsibility. Please enroll under the appropriate age group.

 Family Sail 1 (Ages 7 +)  (3 consecutive Saturdays)

In this INTERMEDIATE class, you will refine your boat handling skills in increased wind conditions while you work on your communication and sportsmanship. Please enroll in the appropriate age group.

SATURDAY Sailing Classes: 

Family Learn to Sail 1: 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.  

Family Learn to Sail 2: 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.     

SAIL 1

Fall & Spring Fee: $175

This BEGINNING sailing course will introduce parents and their children (4 people MAX per boat)  to the exciting world of sailing. You will practice identifying wind direction and speed, rigging your boat, sailing up wind and down, capsizing, tacking and jibing. Master Level 1 skills and progress to Sail 2.  Be prepared for a swimming proficiency test on the first day of class. 

SAIL 2

Fall & Spring Fee: $175

In this INTERMEDIATE class, parents and their children (4 people MAX per boat) will refine your boat handling skills in increased wind conditions while you work on your communication and sportsmanship. PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Sailing 1 course or equivalent.  Be prepared for a swimming proficiency test on the first day of camp.

Big Boat Sailing - Summer Only
Big Boat Sailing - Junior (TWO WEEKS)
 

In this TWO-WEEK Advanced sailing class, you apply your skills as a mariner on a Harbor 20 keel boat. You learn to dock a heavy boat, navigate our harbor, anchor for a snack in the turning basin, and maybe even to sail backwards! You will explore every nook and cranny of Newport Harbor and maybe visit the sea lions at the bell buoy!


PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Sailing 2 or equivalent

Weeks: 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8

Big Boat Sailing - Performance (TWO WEEKS)
 

Sailors will learn how to optimize the speed and performance of our 30' to 38' racing boats. They will learn to fly spinnakers, adjust leads for trim, use winches, and fune tune sails to reach top speeds in different wind conditions.  Sailors will hone their skills in Newport Harbor and along the Pacific coast between Dana Point and Seal Beach while sailing Olson 30s, a Columbia 30 sportboat, and an IMX 38.

PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Sailing 2 or equivalent

Ages: 11-17

Time: 1:15PM - 5:00PM

Weeks: 3-4, 7-8

Big Boat Sailing -  Cruising (TWO WEEKS)

You will use your seamanship skills on our fleet of 30' to 38' keel boats.  You will learn to navigate using a nautical chart and GPS, to utilize basic safety equipment, to anchor for an afternoon swim, and even cooking a snack aboard the vessel.  You will hone these skills both inside Newport Harbor and along the coast between Dana Point and Seal Beach.
