Boating and Aquatics 
There are over 140 boats available at the Newport Sea Base - so its high time to explore the adventures and learning that awaits!

Motor Boating (1 week)

Drive a variety of motor boats while learning the boaters' Rules of the Road. Practice safely fueling your boat, driving in a straight line, making right angle and u-turns, anchoring, docking, and more. Please enroll under the appropriate age group.

Ages 11-17

Bay Fishing (1 week)


Earn the Fishing Merit Badge as  you experience fishing in Newport Harbor.  Learn to use the correct equipment for various types of fish, and how to rig your tackle.  We provide the boat, the tackle, the bait, and the expertise. Our experienced staff knows where kids catch fish! NOTE: Anglers age 16 and over must carry a valid California Fishing License (purchase online or at tackle shops; not available at Newport Sea Base)

Ocean Fishing


Hop aboard a Newport Sea Base sport fishing boat and head toward the ocean in search of bigger fish.  Whether you end up fishing the kelp beds or along deep channels, you will experience five days of excitement trying to outsmart the fish, and maybe even taking home dinner!


PREREQUISITE: Bay Fishing or equivalent. NOTE: Anglers age 16 and up must carry a valid California Fishing License (purchase online or at tackle shops; not available at Newport Sea Base)

Summer Day Camps


Excitement and learning await at Squids Camp! The full-day program features Huck Finn Fishing, Harbor 20 sailing, wacky science, arts and craft projects, visit to the Back Bay Science Center touch tanks, building and racing a mini-sailboat and Sea Base Olympics! Loads of fun at the waterfront with no swimming expertise required. Scouts - The full day program will complete Tiger "Floats & Boats" and Wolf "Spirit of the Water". Sign up for both the AM & PM sessions so you don't miss out on any of it. NOTE: All Campers must be able to listen to group instructions and participate successfully in group activities.​

Summer Camp 2020 overview:


Junior Aquatics Camp

Junior Aquatics Camp is the place for fun science, challenging on-the water activities, team competitions and prizes! Activities feature water bottle rockets, boat tours to ExplorOcean and the Back Bay Science Center touch tanks and a visit by the Harbor Patrol fire boat. This full OR half day program is designed to fulfill four Webelos electives (Aquanaut, Art Explosion, Engineer & Adventures in Science), Bear’s Salmon Run elective and Wolf’s Spirit of the Water elective. Sign up for both the a.m. and p.m. sessions for the full experience! Campers must pass swim check on the first day.

Paddle Sport Aquatics Camp (Kayak, SUP, Canoe, surf)


Paddle Sport Aquatics Camp calls you to a week of fun on-the-water challenges! This full or half day program features canoeing, kayaking, introduction to rowing, stand up paddle boarding (SUP), SUPsquatch, surfing, team competitions, relay races, scavenger hunts and prizes. Registered Boy Scouts can earn the Canoeing and Kayaking merit badges. Enroll in the morning and afternoon sessions to do all the activities!
