The “other guys” are almost always for profit companies running a car donations program for one or more charities. Usually the for profit company retains the lion’s share of the proceeds of the sale of the vehicles at auction, with the charity receiving in many instances, less than 10% of the donation. This is not the situation with the Newport Sea Base. All boat donations are handled by our staff, so you have the piece of mind knowing Newport Sea Base employees have been doing donations for almost thirty years insuring the ease of the donation process.

What tax savings can I expect?

Donations and the tax laws are complex and each individual case differs. If you are considering donation we strongly urge that you consult with your tax advisor to answer question on your personal financial/tax situation.

Is the Newport Sea Base a non-profit organization?

Yes, the Newport Sea Base, as an entity of the Orange County Council, Boy Scouts of America is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation.

What Happens to my boat donation?

Two things can happen. First if the boat fits into the programming needs at the Newport Sea Base, the boat would be retained added to the current fleet used for youth maritime training.

Boats that not used directly in our programming are fixed up or sold “as is” and the funds received help the Newport Sea Base continue its programs of public education, maritime education, nautical safety and team work.

Does the donor need to handle DMV issues?

No. Our program allows the donor to avoid confusing Department of Motor Vehicles paperwork or smog hassles. Simply submit a boat donation application and we will take care of everything else.

How you will benefit when you donate:

  • Feel good about a tax-deductible gift that benefits the youth of Orange County and maritime programs of the Newport Sea Base.
  • Say “goodbye” to the time, energy, expense and stress involved in trying to sell your boat.
  • End all expenses now for dockage, insurance, maintenance, storage, repairs, financial investment and interest.
  • Pay no sale commissions, avoid providing buyer’s marine surveys or dealing with sea trials.
  • Complete the entire transaction in a few days.

How to donate your boat.

Notify us of your desire to make a boat donation by calling or sending us an email.

We may wish to send a representative to the vessel to help in determining that the donation would be mutually beneficial to the donor and the Newport Sea Base program.
